SF : Weaver becomes first American finalist

World No.4 Olivia Weaver has become the first American in history to reach the final of the SmartCentres PSA Squash Tour Finals after she stormed past England’s Georgina Kennedy at Toronto’s Revival Film Studios.

Weaver was only the second player from the United States to appear in the last four after compatriot Amanda Sobhy and she went one step further to set up her first major PSA Squash Tour Final courtesy of an 11-3, 11-2 victory.

The 29-year-old from Philadelphia took up an aggressive ’T’ position right from the start and fired the ball in short whenever she had an opportunity.

After taking a comfortable first game, the American continued to put Kennedy under significant pressure and wasted no time at all in taking the second game to book her spot in the title decider.

What Weaver had to say…

“I was definitely a lot happier with my performance today compared to the last few days,” said Weaver afterwards.

“It was great to have Rod come in last night, he came on court and worked on a few things. I felt more confident about my swing today. You’re on the road for a period of time and if you stop working on things a lot of factors come into it.

“I got back in my zone today and I knew I had to play really well to beat Gina, she’s been playing well this week and she’s always tough to play.”
