Massaro Retains, Elshorbagy Claims the World Series titles in Dubai

The final day of the World Series Finals in Dubai featured two Egypt v England best of five clashes, which ended with Laura Massaro and Mohamed Elshorbagy claiming the titles.

Both finals were repeats of Pool matches earlier in the week, but defending champion Massaro was able to reverse the pool result as she beat Nour El Sherbini in straight games. The Englishwoman kept ahead in a close first game, overturned an early deficit to take the second and never looked like losing after a strong start in the third.

“I’m really happy with my performance overall,“ said Massaro. “I’m one of the oldest ones on Tour now and as long as I feel as though I’m still in contention to win titles then I’m happy. To be able to win the British Open, to reach the final of the ToC and to win here really makes me think that I’m still in contention and I can still win titles.”

Elshorbagy had beaten Willstrop on the opening day, and did so again as he imposed his game throughout. The Englishman never too far away but always under pressure, finally succumbing in just short of an hour’s play as Elshorbagy added one of the few major titles eluding him to his locker.

“To win this tournament has been a dream for so long,” said ElShorbagy after lifting his 25th PSA title. “It’s a very emotional win. I lost some confidence in myself during the season but I feel like I bounced back this week.”
