Day Five : Semi-Finals

Finalists decided at Mall of Arabia

Just eight players were left – seven of them Egyptian  – as the quest for the World Tour Finals title enters the knockout stage tonight at the Mall of Arabia.

Both finals will be repeats of Group Matches as Raneem El Welily and Camille Serme won through to the women’s final, while Karim Abdel Gawad and Mohamed Aboulghar will contest the men’s.

Top seed Welily faced compatriot Nour El Tayeb, and after two close opening games were shared, the world #1 raced away with the decider to reach a second successive final.

Serme took on Nouran Gohar in a repeat of their British Open final, and turned the tables to great effect, winning an extended tiebreak in the first and recovering from a mid-game deficit to take the second to reach the final for the first time.

Gawad came through a tough opening game against defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy – who contributed to his own downfall with a series of errors at the end of the first – before easing through the second.

Abouelghar reached his first major final as he beat Tarek Momen for the first time in ten attempts, coming from a game down to secure the victory.
