World Tour Finals: Makin Advances to Semi-Finals

Wales’ World No.9 Joel Makin made sure his first outing at the CIB PSA World Tour Finals continued to be a success as he booked his place in the semi-finals at the expense of World No.5 Paul Coll.

The Welshman is appearing at his first World Tour Finals after having an impressive year last season and Makin proved he wasn’t there to make up the numbers after he produced a confident display to send out Kiwi Coll in straight-games.

Makin found all of his targets and took advantage of a lacklustre performance from Coll to ensure he finished second in Group B and will face former World No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad tomorrow for a place in the final.

“The difference was tonight that I made sure I hit my spots,” said the Welshman.

“I just got the length through to the back of the court and I knew what I needed to do tactically. I knew I had to switch and get it past him and I did that exactly how I wanted to. My quality going short was much better and that’s more of the squash I want to play.

“That’s the quality of squash that’s going to get into these guys and that’s what I need to do. If I’m severe going short and confident switching the play with height, then I’ve got a good chance.

“Best of fives definitely suit me more and I’m feeling good.”

Result:
[7] Joel Makin (WAL) bt [3] Paul Coll (NZL) 2-0: 11-3, 11-5 (34m)
