World Champion Nour El Sherbini continued her imperious start to the CIB PSA World Tour Finals as she stormed to a comfortable 2-0 victory over World No.1 Nouran Gohar in the first meeting of the world’s top two players since the restart of the PSA World Tour.
Nine of their previous 12 matches had gone in favour of El Sherbini, but Gohar had won the last two coming into tonight’s encounter, with their most recent fixture seeing the 22-year-old get the better of El Sherbini in the group stage of last year’s World Tour Finals.
However, there was no stopping El Sherbini in this time as the World No.2 dismantled Gohar in an immaculate performance to put herself within touching distance of a place in the semi-finals.
She will qualify tonight if tonight’s Group A fixture between Sarah-Jane Perry and Joelle King ends in a 2-1 win for either player.
“It feels great after playing two very tough rounds after each other,” said El Sherbini.
“Nouran has been playing really well over the last reason as you can see from her results. Now she’s come back as World No.1 after the lockdown, so I’m very happy with my performance and I’m really glad that I won 2-0.”
Social distancing protocols in place due to COVID-19 mean that the Mall of Arabia is only operating at 50 per cent capacity, while all players and staff form an event bubble alongside regular testing.
And El Sherbini said that the lack of interaction with fans has taken some getting used to.
“It’s very hard to say to anyone that they can’t take photos,” she said.
“Obviously though it’s a huge advantage that they are here to watch. If we could take a photo, I would love to from two metres away.”
