Nour El Sherbini with the trophy after winning last year's event

El Sherbini Excited By 'Unique' World Tour Finals

Defending World Tour Finals Champion Nour El Sherbini is looking forward to a “very unique tournament” at this week’s CIB PSA World Tour Finals 2018-2019.

The World No.2 will travel to Cairo with the aim of retaining her crown, after securing victory in last year’s final over current World No.1 Raneem El Welily.

Unlike the majority of tournaments on the PSA World Tour, the Finals have a completely different schedule, with a group round-robin stage. The Egyptian believes that this makes it unique on the Tour.

“It’s a different tournament as the group stages give every player a chance to qualify to the semi finals even if they lose one or two matches,” Sherbini said.

“Playing best of three is also different you need to be ready from the first point. [It is] a very unique tournament and it’s good to have some change.”

For the first time in its history, Egypt will play host to the tournament. The glass court will be housed at the stunning Mall of Arabia, and El Sherbini is excited to play in her home country, especially with it being the final event of the season.

“[I am] excited to play the last one in Egypt, especially this tournament. I hope it won’t be the last one and I hope it will be a good week for me,” the Warrior Princess added.

“It’s been a very long season for me, trying to push myself and train for the last tournament and playing the last one in Egypt is special so one more push and then, we start the off season.”

Despite it being the final event of the season, and with only the top eight qualifying for both the men’s and women’s events, El Sherbini knows that it will still be a competitive environment.

“Of course it’s fun, but it’s also very competitive. Everyone wants to play and win even if it’s the last tournament and all eight players play to win.”

The group stages begin on Sunday June 9 at 19:00 (GMT+2). Six matches will be played per night for the first four days of the event until the group stages have drawn to a close.

Group stage matches will take place at 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, 21:30 between June 9-12. The semi-finals will be held at 19:00 on Thursday June 13.

The finals will begin at 19:30 on Friday June 14.

Every match from the tournament will be shown live on SQUASHTV (rest of world), Eurosport Player (Europe only), ON Sport (Egypt) and the official Facebook page of the PSA World Tour.
