Analysing the Contenders – Men

The SmartCentres PSA Squash Tour Finals get underway in just five days with eight of the top performing male and female players set to battle it out for the coveted season ending title.

Staged at Toronto’s Revival Film Studios, the SmartCentres PSA Squash Tour Finals will be held in Canada for the first time in the tournament’s history. Group stage action will begin on Monday June 23 at 15:00 (GMT-5). Eight matches will be played per day for the first three days of the event until the group stage has drawn to a close

We’ve taken a look at the men’s event and who the contenders are for the title.

Men’s Groups

Mostafa Asal & Diego Elias

World No.1 and No.2 Mostafa Asal and Diego Elias are the favourites for this years men’s competition and many will expect another final between the two to be played out on June 27.

Asal has made the Tour Finals his own ever since his first appearance in 2021. He’s made the final every year since, winning on three occasions. ‘The Raging Bull’ is the current World No.1 and World Champion and after losing the British Open final to Elias, will be determined to return to winning ways and capture a record equalling fourth Tour Finals title.

Elias will be making his sixth Tour Finals appearance next week in Canada, as he looks to capture the title for the first time. The event hasn’t been a favourite of the Peruvian so far in his career. The former World Champion has only advanced out of the group stages once in his five attempts but as this year’s No.2 seed holds hopes of a first victory.

Paul Coll & Joel Makin

2022 runner-up Paul Coll has been a consitent fixture in the PSA Squash Tour Finals for the past six seasons, progressing out of the group stages on three occasions. The New Zealander turned his form around in 2025 and has reached his seeding in all eight events, winning twice. A win next week in Toronto would be a big lift to Coll heading into next season as he looks to chase down the leading pair Asal and Elias and detain the advances of World No.4 Makin.

It’s hard to believe that Joel Makin will be making his Tour Finals debut next week, becoming the first Welshman to feature in the season ending event since David Evans in 2001. Makin has climbed to his highest ranking to date recently, currently sitting at World No.4 and will be looking to make himself known in his first Tour Finals appearance. Makin is in the same group as Asal, meaning that a repeat of their feisty British Open semi-final may be reignited.

Marwan & Mohamed Elshorbagy

Both Mohamed and Marwan Elshorbagy are former winners of the event, with Mohamed winning on two occasions in 2017 and 2018.

Marwan worked his way back up the rankings after falling to World No.10 at the start of the season. The younger Elshorbagy opted to miss a few of the Platinum events to target smaller World Events, a tactic that worked well for the now World No.5 as he claimed wins at the Open Squash Classic, Squash in the Land 2025 and Squash on Fire Open. He’ll be hoping to continue his good form and finish the season off well in a tournament that holds good memories for him.

Two-time champion Mohamed, is featuring in his 12th consecutive PSA Squash Tour Finals as he looks to join Gregory Gaultier, Mostafa Asal and Peter Nicol on three titles. The current World No.6 knows exactly what it takes to win this event but finds himself in arguably the tougher group of the two with both Elias and Coll sitting in Group B with him. Mohamed hasn’t beaten either Elias or Coll in two years but in the best of the three format group stages format, the 2017 World Champion could be dangerous.

Karim Gawad & Tarek Momen

2019 winner Karim Gawad has shown some of his best form this season, especially during his Australian Open win in March and his Palm Hills Open runner up finish just last month. ‘The Baby-Faced Assassin’ is always a threat when he is anywhere close to his best and with this being the season ending event, he may throw everything he has into this event to try and become a two-time champion.

The final player in the field is 37-year-old former World Champion Tarek Momen. Despite featuring in eight Squash Tour Finals, Momen has only ever reached the semi-finals twice in his career and is yet to reach a final in this event. ‘The Viper’ possesses unbelievable skill and touch at the front of the court and if he gets off to a good start in the best of the three format, he will be hard to catch. Situated in Group A with Asal, Makin and Marwan Elshorbagy, he will see that as a good opportunity to progress to the final four.

All matches will be held at Toronto’s Revival Film Studios and matches will be streamed live on SQUASHTV. The semi-finals and finals will also be shown live by PSA’s broadcast partners. Tickets can be purchased here.
